Web Project Categories
In order for you to begin your web project, you must identify the kind of web project that will
meet your current needs. To easily identify project categories, I have associated each category type
with a price you could expect to
pay from an associated developer (or wannabe). Be advised that the following outlines
are simply to show you the various categories of web project types. When I consult with you,
we will identify which of these categories best fits your current need by identifying a series of answers,
vital to targeting your web needs. For consultation details, see
How I Identify Your Project Type.
-
Beginner - $300 to 750
Static pages with a few pictures or web sites completely generated by programs that build web pages
(MS Front Page, Adobe GoLive!) are very common in this price range. For the small businessman
on a budget that just simply wants to get a web presence, this is a possible starting point (note: I did
NOT say it is a good starting point). Often times, these 'starter'
web sites are created by a friend, relative, or acquaintance. There are several reasons this
solution should be avoided, but one good reason not to... cost. If you can't afford to do
it right, at least get going.
Note: web sites in this price range are hosted by someone that you pay monthly/yearly.
-
Beginner Plus - $750 to 1500
More static pages with more pictures and a more uniform look by a computer business, or small business
computer professional is common in this price range. These sites are generally created by people
that spend more time creating sites, and they are more proficient with the programs that automatically
generate their web code (MS Front Page, Adobe GoLive!).
Note: web sites in this price range are hosted by someone that you pay monthly/yearly.
-
Medium - $1500 to 5000
Hand coded (without web page generation programs) custom web sites, with original graphics are the best
initial move... if you can afford them. This is the most progressive style for businesses to
upgrade to. Many businesses start with an inexpensive solution, and then they are driven
to upgrade to the more professional solution; either by the need to do something more sophisticated (that
is out of the knowledge range of the first web builder), or they want a more customized and professional
looking site. It is common for businesses to realize after they get a web site going, that for
many potential customers the web site may be the only 'look into' your business; and customers tend to judge the
quality of your business or business operations by the quality of your web site.
Note: web sites in this price range are hosted by someone that you pay monthly/yearly.
-
Advanced - $7500 plus
This solution adds on to the hand coded (without web page generation programs) custom web sites, with
original graphics. An application containing a database of pertinent information that lives at
your business is used for you to easily enter your information. When the desired information
is in your database, you click a button to generate a web page... then move the created page to your
web site. This method allows you to simply backup the database program at your business, and
gives you the control to be able to change any pages you like as often as necessary... without having
to contact your web person and pay money for each change (these changes can really add
up). This kind of control is optimal for businesses that require their web site to be
constantly changing.
Note: web sites in this price range are hosted by someone that you pay monthly/yearly.
-
Top Level - $25000 plus
This solution adds on to the hand coded (without web page generation programs) custom web sites, with
original graphics. An online web application containing a robust database that lives on it's own server
is used to provide web pages that directly get information from the database each time a visitor views the
page. This is the most expensive solution, but there are definitely times when this is the
correct solution.
Note: web sites in this price range generally require the owner to host their site on their own web / database server(s).
