LAZ 11/8/2000  - If you are on a budget and need a great multi-purpose controller, this could be just the thing you have been waiting for. It has a nice (unique) look and feel, is very configurable, and is a great fit for many of your controller needs.

LAZ Review Breakdown 80.5
First Impression Normally the first thing you think of when you pay less than $40 for a controller is that you will be missing out on something - quality, configuration, comfort, or looks. But simply looking at the stick, and playing with the configurations let me know this was not just a good buy! This controller is great for flight sims or other games that require smooth motion direction and multiple configurable controls 8.5
Software Installation The software was easy to install, and the paper manual included easy to follow instructions. My install was 12.7 meg, which seemed like a lot considering it is just a controller... but Saitek bundles this controller with a very configurable controller interface. 8.5
Software Controller Interface By default, I did not have an icon to launch their interface with... so I had to search around before I found an icon in 'My Computer'. Once I found the icon I created a shortcut on my desktop and was ready to go. I double clicked the icon, and found a great interface that was easy to use (I just started clicking around and seeing what things did). I used the New Game Wizard to identify a game (in this case JETFIGHTER IV), then after that I got a J-IV profile. From their, I simply double clicked on the profile and was able to set buttons by clicking on the controller buttons found a picture of the stick! This company has one of the best configurable controller interfaces out there. 9.0
Game Included None. It definitely would have been nice to package this game with some older version flight game that would help showcase what this controller can do. 4.0
Help Instructions The controller comes with a paper manual and the web site repeats that help with a duplicate online PDF file. The paper manual contains pictures and is written very well. The instructions were easy to follow. 7.5
Comfort The controller is comfortable and extremely configurable. I am a person that doesn't mind being spoiled, and Saitek went the extra mile to make sure this product could work for anyone in the family (even the left hander in our family). This was my first experience with a twist rudder option (I am used to pedals), and it was very cool! I also really like having the throttle on the controller. In the old days - we used to have a stick, a throttle and button controller, and rudder pedals... all separate and quite the ordeal to set up. That kind of set up still has it's place, but it is great to see them all combined on one controller, giving everyone on a budget the ability to enjoy fun away from the keyboard. 8.5
Construction (Quality) The controller is somewhere around the medium quality range, but you have to give it a better than average score for the quality-to-price comparison. The controller has a tool mounted on the unit that allows you to make adjustments (and this addition was done very tastefully, blending in so well that it was difficult to find without instruction - which is nice). 7.5
Looks I really like Saitek's styling. They broke out of the normal when they developed their own style of controllers. If you look around, you will see that this controller is very distinguishable between other controllers in the category. The gold on this particular model looks very nice. 9.0
Value (price for what you get) This controller is a great bargain value. If they manage to ship the product with a decent game, it will be one of the best values in the gaming community - period. 9.0
Recommend to Others If you are having a hard time with the idea of spending the high dollars that many of the other controllers cost, this is a great option. 9.0

RECOMMENDATIONS to the Vendor

LAZ

  • Get together with one of the flight sim vendors, and try to get a last year circuit game to ship with this product.
  • Saitek came up with a real neat method of wrapping the unused cord underneath the controller on their Action Pad, and I would like to see them carry that great idea over to their other controller products.
  • Some type of desk mounting system (that is easily removable for those who would find it annoying), for some of us that get a little too wild when we find our selves over our heads in a sim game.
