KOGGS 10/5/2001  - Upon receiving this from Microsoft, I thought it looked like a huge mouse on steroids! Considering the name, Strategic Commander (SC) and the impressive large footprint -with all them buttons!, it gave me the impression that this thing was built militarily tough!

On with the review SIR, YES SIR!

Koggs Gets Strategic 82
First Impression It seems Microsoft took a molded cast of my hand and used it as a measuring tool! A perfect fit! All the buttons are easily accessible and the controllers movements are both smooth and fluent.

My only complaint here is that it feels way too light. The mouse part swivels on top of the base that is clearly large enough to be stable but the weight of it, or lack there of, makes me wonder a bit. The base needs to weigh more.

8.0
Software Installation Everything installed without a hitch. The SC connects to your PC via a USB connector and compliments the use of your keyboard and mouse while playing strategy games. Microsoft also includes an instructional video to properly introduce you to your newly acquired weapon of choice. 10.0
Software Controller Interface The software interface is relatively straight forward. After reading all of the available instructions and viewing the above mentioned instructional video, I had little if any problems configuring it.

The Skinny

While playing 2D strategy games, you can use the SC to move around the battle map while keeping your mouse free to select units or buildings. In 3D games, you can use the SC for navigational purposes such as rotating around and zooming in and out.

Programmable? Heck Yeah!

The SC is completely programmable giving you any thinkable option available. If the game you're playing supports a certain move, then program it to the desired SC button you want, and use it! It's really that easy. Now that's what I'm talkin bout! Tasks that require multiple commands are now a button away! Talk about efficiency.

Additionally

There are three shift buttons on the side of the controller allowing you to program up to four commands each to buttons 1-6. They are located and easily accessed where your thumb rests. ALSO, when you get to the point where you're comfortable with all of the above mentioned commands but wished you had more, then Say hello to your new lil friends! These friends, are in the form of a three position profile slider switch located on the base of the SC. This gives you access to three separate profiles during your game. Thus increasing your possible programming commands to 72. Shtymee!

Record on the Fly

Ever been in a situation where you're playing a game with the manual open in front of you and need to press a sequence of keys to execute a move? With this lil gem, you can use the record button located on the controllers base to program commands during game play. It's easy. Just press the record button, press the button you want to program, punch the sequence of keys on your keyboard, press the record button again, and that's it! Now every time you hit that button you just programmed, it executes the command entered.

Game Included No games included here -which would have been nice to see given the price and the fact that this thing is mega-programmable. Why not showcase it's capabilities with a provided game?

It does however come with over 30 strategy game profiles that are also updated to include more via their web site.

Bottom Line No games included, which is becoming more and more the average, but it does come with the additional profiles. Umm, I guess I'll give it a 6?!

Help Instructions An instructional booklet in nine different lingo's is accompanied with the SC. It's pretty basic giving you a brief overview of all it's functions -which I found to be of little or no value. The instructional video however, and the help found at their web site provided me the necessary information to get me well on my way.

Bottom Line The more you use this thing, the more comfortable you will become with it, and the software interface.

Comfort Fits in your left hand like a glove! All the buttons are right at your fingertips and are not too easily pressable - meaning that you won't accidentally press a button while traversing over it to get to the one you want.

The downside to the comfort is it's lack of weight making it very unstable in heated situations. If found myself chasing after it several times while trying to navigate my way around. I somewhat elieviated this problem by placing a rubber mat underneath it but still did not cure the problem.

7.0
Construction (Quality) It seems pretty durable. It's made of a medium to heavy duty plastic that looks as though it will last for as long as you want to own it. The top swivels and slides freely on top of the base providing smooth movement with positive stopping points in each direction. Again, it's lack of weight is a big factor here. You'll have to press down on it a bit to get er to stay in place. The cord is of average length -6 ft. - and easily reached my PC. 7.5
Looks It looks like a mouse on roids! Very nice looking with a functional design. Once I plugged it in via the USB connection, it lit up like a Christmas tree! The six buttons illuminate orange, instantly making it an attraction to all who were nearby.

NOTE I especially enjoy the effects of light. I think it can really set your controller apart from the rest. The six buttons illuminate as well as the Record button illuminating red. This is great but if you're going to add lights, why not light up all the buttons? Why not, while your at it, add more lights to the base? The box indicates a green and yellow light combo for the six buttons and a red light for the Record button. The video also shows the six buttons glowing green. Are there different color combo's out there? If so, I saw nothing indicating this. As you can tell I was a bit let down here BUT the lights are a nice touch nonetheless.

8.5
Value (price for what you get) Considering the 72 commands and the ability to record on the fly, I'd say Microsoft has a real winner here. The price is a bit steep but if you're interested in having an edge on your competition, then what are you waiting for? 8.5
Recommend to Others The SC is designed specifically for the PC strategy gamer. If you fit this description, then this is a must addition to your arsenal of PC strategy weapons. Just be sure to get a non slip rubber pad to set it on. 8.5

RECOMMENDATIONS to the Vendor

KOGGS

  • Add some much needed weight to the base.
  • Add more lighting effects to the base and other buttons. A nice soft green light illuminating Microsoft on the base would look very cool.
  • Also, there's no better way to showcase this controller than to have it ship with a game specifically profiled for the SC.
