Max Payne

Name:  3D Realms - Max Payne

PC
Best of 2001

3D Realms Description:
Three years back a young NYPD cop, Max Payne, came home one night to find his family senselessly slaughtered by a gang of drug-crazed junkies, high on a previously unknown synthetic drug. Now that same drug, Valkyr, has spread through the whole New York City like a nightmare plague, and Max Payne’s on a crusade for revenge, out to get even. To Drug Enforcement Administration, DEA, this new drug was evil incarnate, to be stopped at any cost. Max's boss and best friend, the only one who knew his true identity, has been murdered, and Max's been framed for the slaying. Everything ripped apart in a New York minute... Max Payne is a man with nothing to lose in the violent, cold urban night. A fugitive undercover cop framed for murder, and now hunted by cops and the mob. Max is a man with his back against the wall, fighting a battle he cannot hope to win. Prepare for a new breed of deep action game. Prepare for pain…

ZWORM 10/14/2001  - Max Payne was in development for over three years and when it finally came out gamers couldn’t wait to get their hands on it. Although some heard from E3 reports that the game would be a cheap rip-off from Hong Kong action stud John Woo. Others wondered if the game would feature out of date graphics and a cheesy story line – just so that Finnish game developer Remedy Entertainment could finally get it out the door. Well, loyal action fans it is time to rejoice, because the critics couldn’t be more wrong. Remedy wanted to make sure that they released a well-crafted third person shooter that stayed true to its self - and that they did. Max Payne reinvents the way we should look at gameplay with ‘bullet time’ and its graphics are nothing short of spectacular. The story line is consistently gripping and the sound effects tie everything together perfectly to create a game that reminds us that this is what good gaming is all about.

Zworm Experiences Max Payne 93
First Impression and Game Installation

With a dark and snowy New York City as a backdrop, Max Payne delves into the city’s sinister bowels producing an eerie and often disturbing look into the darker side of human kind. And the game’s liberal doses of violence and drug use are a constant remainder of the fitting ‘mature’ rating. Despite the heavy body count that Max leaves behind like blood soaked footprints in a freshly fallen snow, the violence is kept in check by doing away with the recently popular trend of exploding heads and severed limbs. Make no mistake; this is not a child’s game. With that said, Max Payne is a quite easily the best shooter that I’ve played.

The story is about Max Payne, a framed NYC undercover cop, who is avenging the violent death of his wife and child. Max must find the killers, prove his innocence, and uncover a conspiracy that has its seedy tentacles deeply implanted in some of New York’s least<\i> glorious locals like subway stations and dilapidated night clubs. Does is it sound like classic Hollywood action film fare? Of course, and that’s one of the beauties of this game. Remedy managed to fashion a superb action game that closely mirrors what we have come to love from movies like The Matrix<\i>.

’Bullet time’ is a gaming first. The creative sprites at Remedy have hit the jackpot here, because this feature simply rocks and, quite honestly, makes this game. When the feature is activated, the game action slows way down, but allows the mouse aiming cursor to move at normal speed. The result is a distinct gaming advantage that tips the scales in your favor when facing almost insurmountable odds – which is almost all of the time.

Installation was a breeze and I was underway within minutes.

Configurable Options and Ease of Use Typical of most shooters nowadays, Max Payne’s options are so configurable that everyone should have no problem finding a combination that is right for them. 10.0
Graphics

Max Payne employs the best graphics I have yet to see in a game. With the developers recommending a 700 MHz processor, 128 MB of RAM, and a 32 MB graphics card for gameplay, it’s quite safe to say that Max Payne is the most demanding PC game to date it terms of system resources.

With the high system demands come super high expectations for graphic quality and Max Payne does not disappoint. Bullets are rendered as 3D objects, so that when ‘bullet time’ is engaged shotgun buckshot, for instance, can be seen sailing over your head. Although my favorite has to be when using the sniper rifle, the camera actually follows<\i> the bullet en route to the target. The effect is done masterfully, and I must admit, I had to replay several scenes, because I couldn’t get enough of some of the effects.

10.0
Video at Minimum and Maximum Want a game that will justify the purchase of that new GeForce3? No problem, the game will most definitely test your video card with video options up to 1600 x 1200 x 32. If you are feeling a little video card challenged, Max Payne allows you to turn down or off several settings to keep you your frame rates up to playable levels. 10.0
Sound

Remember the buckshot zipping past your head? Well, not only can you see it, but you can hear it also. The use of environmental sound effects is used to perfection to round off a truly immersive gameplay experience.

The comic book like scripted voice acting can, at times, seems a little over-the-top, but as the game plays on, you will find that it works well with the overall theme of the story.

9.5
Beginner thru Advanced Use Max Payne features no standard difficulty level slider bar or grade school like radio buttons that let you choose from near pathetic to superhuman level gameplay. Instead, the developer creatively incorporated a revolutionary, self-adjusting gameplay system in which Max Payne adjusts itself to your play level so that you don’t have to. Was that last level a little too hard? Don’t worry the game will crank the intensity down a notch on the next one. The result is the feeling of consistent gameplay that has no peaks and valleys. The system is just one more feature that allows the game to flow seamlessly from one scene to another. 10.0
Multi-player The developers felt that a multi-player option would take away from the magic of the single player game. After playing Max Payne with the ‘bullet time’ feature, I couldn’t agree more --- it just won’t work. 5.0
Help Instructions The straight forward, easy to play nature of Max Payne will get you right up to speed as soon as the game begins – no instructions necessary. You will find the short instruction booklet that accompanies the CD to be a light read while the game is loading, but not necessary. The tutorial will show you everything you need to know like ‘bullet time’ and general gameplay mechanics. Besides, if you know what a gun looks like and can shoot it, you will do just fine in this game. 9.0
Value (price for what you get) Granted, after 12-14 hours you should finish and so the game can be considered on the short side. But, after playing and experiencing Max Payne I feel that the purchase is well worth the investment. Included with the game is a level editor and an unlocking of a ‘New York minute’ variation after the game has been completed. Just the novel and cutting edge nature of the game itself is reason enough to buy it. 9.5
Recommend to Others Max Payne raises the bar for shooters with its tasty eye candy and unique gameplay mechanics. If you’ve ever wanted to play a game that looks, feels, and sounds like a John Woo style action flick, then go get it. After all, isn’t that what it’s all about? 10.0

RECOMMENDATIONS to the Vendor

ZWORM

  • I wasn’t able to configure my mouse wheel correctly to make the zoom on the sniper rifle to work right.
  • Don’t just leave us hanging there. We want a sequel!
